Murals on climate resilience by local artist Suelin Low Chew Tung are now displayed at various government ministries and statutory bodies. The murals shall raise awareness about Grenada’s efforts to adapt to climate change by showcasing thematic areas from Grenada’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP). The NAP is a 5-year plan with the vision being “a resilient nation that continuously adapts to climate change by reducing their vulnerability through comprehensive adaptation strategies”. To achieve this vision the NAP, which was approved by Cabinet in November 2017, comprises of 12 thematic areas or ‘Programmes of Action’:

1. Institutional Arrangements
2. Mainstreaming
3. Water Availability
4. Food Security
5. Ecosystem Resilience
6. Integrated Coastal Zone Management
7. Resilient Infrastructure and Sustainable Land Management
8. Disaster Risk Reduction and Disease Prevention
9. Climate and Sea-Level Rise Data and Projections
10. Sustained Public Education and Participation
11. Climate Financing
12. Monitoring and Evaluation

The NAP was developed with the input of more than 160 stakeholders from climate-related fields and is aligned with Grenada’s priorities for combating climate change and achieving sustainable development. These priorities include Grenada’s Climate Change Policy and National Determined Contributions. Therefore, this plan is crucial when preparing to access climate finance from international climate funds for resilience-building projects and programmes.

As artistic expressions of Grenada being more climate resilient, national symbols such as the nutmeg are integrated into the eleven murals with symbols related to the Programmes of Action. These murals are currently on display at the Ministerial Complex in the Botanical Gardens, the Grenada Development Bank, the National Water and Sewage Authority’s office in Grenville and the T.A. Marryshow Community College.

The murals were created under the Getting Grenada Green Climate Fund Ready (3G) Project by local artist Suelin Low Chew Tung and presented at the Green Climate Fund Structured Dialogues for the Caribbean Region last year. The Structured Dialogue was a four-day conference, held in Grenada, where regional member states presented their projects for climate change mitigation and adaptation and interacted with representatives from the Green Climate Fund and implementing agencies about potential project development and financing.
