World Ozone Day 2022 Celebrations in Grenada

In the context of the World Ozone Day 2022 celebrations in Grenada, GIZ Proklima in collaboration with the National Ozone Unit (NOU) in Grenada organized a Kick-Off Workshop for the project Cool Contributions fighting Climate Change II (C4 II) and a handing-over ceremony of equipment and scholarships.

Grenada launches Cool Contributions fighting Climate Change II (C4 ll)

On Wednesday, 14th September 2022, a Kick-Off Workshop marked the beginning of the C4 ll activities in Grenada. The workshop served to discuss with key stakeholders the activities of the second phase of the project and was attended by Hon. Kerryne James, Minister of Climate Resilience, the Environment and Renewable Energy (MoCRE), the National Ozone Unit headed by Mr. Leslie Smith, technicians working with AC suppliers as well as future Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) technicians from the T.A. Marryshow Community College (TAMCC).

C4 ll builds on a long-standing cooperation and transformation processes already initiated in the first phase (C4 I) and supports the implementation of Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) measures in the RAC sector. The activities will be in line with the actions of Grenada’s National Cooling Action Plan, while also working towards more ambitious NDCs. Support will be provided for strengthening national policy instruments (i.e., MEPS, building codes, GWP refrigerant limit targets, Green Public Procurement, and Standards) to facilitate a better market uptake of Green Cooling technologies and reduce the climate impact of cooling appliances in-use.

During the workshop, Hon. Kerryne James, gave an informative and inspiring speech, stating that “Grenada is perfectly suited to act as a front runner on Green Cooling, not only among island states.” Additionally, the public should be made aware of the benefits of cooling equipment using natural refrigerants. After a fruitful discussion, the participants left knowing that Grenada is on track to keep its commitment to the Paris Agreement, the Montreal Protocol, and the Kigali Amendment.

Handing-over ceremony of equipment, scholarships, and invitations to attend the Cool Training

In keeping with the theme of National Ozone Day 2022 “Global Cooperation to Protect Life on Earth”, a handing-over ceremony was held on September 16th, 2022, at the T.A. Marryshow Community College (TAMCC). While the National Ozone handed over scholarships and new RAC equipment to national training institutes, GIZ invited three RAC technicians to attend the Cool Training in Germany. The Cool Training addresses, in theory, and practice, the safe use and handling of natural refrigerants for commercial refrigeration systems with a focus on propane (R290), carbon dioxide (R744), and ammonia (R717). It also includes a visit to this year’s Chillventa, the world’s leading trade fair for refrigeration technology.

The global project Cool Contribution fighting Climate Change ll (C4 II) is funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) under the International Climate Initiative (IKI). The focus countries are Costa Rica, Grenada, and the Philippines.
