World Water Day 2022 provided the perfect opportunity for the Climate-Resilient Water Sector in Grenada (G-CREWS) Project to increase greater awareness on the need to conserve our previous resource – Water.

The theme for the 22^nd March 2022 observance was Groundwater: Making the Invisible, Visible; and the project team ably assisted by its local partners ensured that water saving and conserving was a key feature, not only on the day but throughout the month of March.

According to the National Water and Sewerage Authority (NAWASA), approximately 5-10 percent of the water supplied by the lone institution to the population is obtained from groundwater. This water is generated from several wells on the island. In a 7-minute video, the process and negative impacts of pollution due to human activity was shared.

Joining with our partner – NAWASA’s management, staff, and Board members, the G-CREWS family were off in an awareness walk. The 3-mile walk took place in one of the communities where a ground water well is located. Participants also received a brief educational session and tour on the operation of the well at the site before returning to their rendezvous point. Members from the Grenada Solid Waste Management Authority (GSWMA) were also present on the walk.

Reiterating the need to save this precious resource was done by the branding of 19 omnibuses with SAVE WATER stickers. Created in project logo colours, the stickers placed along the length of the driver side, carried the words SAVE WATER. Pictures of either a rainwater harvesting system hooked up to a house or a man washing down a car using a bucket complimented the words.

The drivers were not left out, as they too were adorned in blue conserve water t-shirts to be worn regularly. The buses divided into different zones ply several routes within Grenada picking up and dropping off passengers and will act as a reminder to the citizenry that water is precious. These buses will carry the sticker for a period of 6 months.

The use of more water efficient devices to assist in reduction of water use, is and will continue to be a main area promoted by the project. To this end, through discussions with retail outlets in Grenada – Creative House Do It Best and L.A. Purcell discounts on these devices featured prominently.

The opportunity for public engagement is tantamount to getting the message across to all citizens. For World Water Day, the G-CREWS Project tested citizens knowledge on water topics and phrases in a word scramble initiative. The participants who were able to unscramble as much as 15 words received a package filled with project branded items.

Equally showcasing their artistic skills by vividly displaying their understanding of Groundwater and its role in our water supply were the children. Through a collaborative venture between the project and the Lions Club of St. George’s, more than 25 posters were adjudicated. The competition was in observance of World Water Day.  Most of the children demonstrated in their drawings where ground water is found, how it is utilized in the different sectors inclusive of Agriculture, Commercial, Tourism. A few indicated the importance of Rainwater Harvesting. The top 3 winners were recognized during a prize giving ceremony.
